Search for Spiritual Truth
[This article was written in response to an article titled “Searching for Truth” by the Trinidad Maha Sabha (Trinidad Express, Jan 29, 1999). The abstraction presented by the Maha Sabha’s intellectual genius, Mr. David Frawley, is best characterized as “a wondrous deal of nothing” (Shakespeare). Inaccurate (if not meaningless) premises are correlated with the most fallacious logic to generate a cerebral dissonance that will certainly baffle the unsuspecting reader. One cannot escape his illogic.]
Truth bears the connotation that it can withstand scrutiny without reservation and condition.
Is it then true that the glass is half-full, or is it half-empty? The former is “true” if one qualifies the condition in terms of how much liquid is at the bottom. Thus, we find two different and mutually exclusive conditions which proponents insist are truths. In critical decision-making, this state of affairs can effect tragic results. The solution to this dilemma is to recognize that these are not truths in the connotative sense but that they are partial truths which need to be qualified carefully. But we desire an unqualified or unconditional truth, otherwise calledthe whole truth . The whole truth is that the glass is full, period: half with liquid and half with air. The whole truth is not governed by shifting perspectives and does not lend itself to deception.
Half Truths are Whole Lies
Half-truths are whole lies and are usually utilized deceitfully. In this context, every conclusion Mr. Frawley derives is, at best, a half-truth if not a total absurdity. For example, he implies that any belief which can be stated “in clear and uncomplicated terms” cannot be factual: no wonder so many folks are confused about their gender! And it is now disgustingly apparent why Mr. Frawley will impute divinity to homosexuals. Mr. Frawley finds fault with anyone who warns others that fire burns, his absurd reason being that this truth can be stated so clearly! He says that we cannot know what someone says unless we know the person himself: then Mr. Frawley must have known the writers of the Vedas since he believes he knows what they said. He thumbs his nose at God because God chose to do things His own way: that is, giving only one eternal Truth and only one way to Himself. Let Mr. Frawley answer as God asks him the following questions as found in the Bible (Job 38 and 39, great reading for everyone!): “Who is this who darkens counsel by words without knowledge? Now prepare yourself like a man: I will question you, and you shall answer me … Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? … Who determined its measurements? … Have you commanded the morning since your days began, and caused the dawn to know its place … Does the hawk fly by your wisdom … Shall the one who contends with the Almighty correct Him?” How insolent of Mr. Frawley to question God’s decision to limit his incarnation to one occurrence; and to question God’s ability to express His thoughts concerning mankind in such a manner that we can understand within our limitations; and to rebuke God for making His way the only acceptable way?
The Hidden Truth of the Vedas
Only the whole truth can be the sole basis for sound judgment . Mr. Frawley’s pronouncements are clearly far from the whole truth. His verbal contortions and self-acclamation, though high sounding, do not constitute either intellectualism or the whole truth. But if we filter out all the philosophical and political garble from the Vedas we shall find a glimpse of the whole exclusive Truth variously called Guru (destroyer of ignorance/falsehood), Param Brahma (Supreme God), and Purush Prajapati (the Supreme Creator who became man and sacrificed Himself)). The only personification of this Truth is Jesus the Christ who gave Himself as a self-sacrifice for the sin of mankind and raised Himself from the dead. This is described in the Vedas in much detail but diffusely. The unclouded Truth is detailed in the Holy Bible, and yet only God can make it perceptible to the human heart. As God declares in 1 Corinthians 2:14: “But the natural man receives not the things of Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him; neither can he know them (things of God) because they are spiritually discerned (understood)” . It is his grasp of this truth that led the great Indian philosopher Dr. Radhakrishnan to point his favorite and learned nephew, then at the brink of suicide, to the Bible; what was previously ignored as folly was revealed by God as redeeming Truth to him, and he became the Rev. Paul Sudhakar who led numerous Brahmin priests from all over India to the Lord Jesus Christ.
The Truth Which Liberates
“I am the Way, the Truth, the Life” Jesus said. John 8:32 declares: “You shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free” . Jesus declares in John 8:36: “If the Son (Jesus) therefore shall make you free, you shall be free indeed”. He is the only answer to ancient sages’ prayer for “moksha” or salvation: “Asato ma sat gamaya” (from untruth lead me to the truth); “tamaso ma jyotir gamaya” (from spiritual darkness lead me to the light); “mryturma amritam gamaya” (from spiritual death lead me to eternal life). No one in the history of mankind could answer these requests except Jesus the Savior. He invites you to “Come unto me all ye that labor and are heavy laden and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart; and you shall find rest unto your souls” (Matthew 11:28-29). The Bible, the Vedas, and the Qur’an all speak of sin which carries eternal hell as its ultimate penalty. The Bible and Vedas declare only one way of escape, that is, through the Supreme Sacrifice. The Qur’an refers us back to the Bible . We arrive at Jesus the Messiah as the Way to salvation. Ask Him to forgive you your sins and make you a child of God.
