“What is Man that thou art Mindful of Him?”

Many poets and philosophers have pondered this Biblical question “… of man, the heart of man, and human nature”, as one poet put it. Consider the merits of the following profound statement:

“For I know that nothing good dwells within me, that is, in my flesh. I can will what is right, but I cannot do it. For I do not do the good I want to, but the evil I do not want to do is what I do. Now if I do what I do not wish to, it is no longer I that do it, but sin which dwells within me. So I find it to be a law that when I want to do right, evil lies close at hand. For I delight in the law of God, in my innermost self, but I see in my members another law at war with the law of my mind and making me captive to the law of sin which dwells in my members. O wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death?”
(Holy Bible: Romans 7:18-24)

This is the confession of every honest human being, regardless of age, education, wealth, power, or philosophy. The ending question still resonates deep within every person who yearns to be godly. What is the answer? Paul the Apostle and countless millions through the ages have found the answer in the next verse:

“Thanks be to God, through Jesus Christ our Lord (I can be delivered) !”
(Holy Bible: Romans 7:25)

This is still the answer: only Jesus the Messiah (Saviour, Christ) was not touched or overcome by sin, and He will impart into us His power to overcome sin. Better yet, He forgives all our sins and gives us a guarantee of eternal life in Heaven. What love is this that God should care for wretched man?
